It started in California prisons in the 1970s by Black freedom fighters who wanted to honor the lives and deaths of Black political prisoners killed by the state, bring awareness to prison conditions, and honor the radical tradition of Black resistance against anti-Black state violence and systemic oppression. Black August is an acknowledgment and commemoration of the countless organizers, activists, and freedom fighters who sacrificed their freedom and lives in the struggle for Black liberation. A Black Cultural Zone sponsored event presents a captivating, curated collection of empowering and thought-provoking films honoring Black resilience and resistance. Panel discussions will follow each film. Learn More: https://oaklandlibrary.bibliocommons.com/events/64b98dc2f807d2ec63082b65

Black August honors the fallen freedom fighters of the Black Liberation Movement, abolitionists, and those who fight against systemic oppression and racism. Together, we organize toward the liberation and self-determination of Black people worldwide. The official commemoration of Black August began in California prisons in August 1979. Black liberation has no one day or month that is remiss of practice, but August in itself is filled with significant stories of Black history across time and geography. We invite you to join us at our special events throughout the month of August to celebrate.
